Metter Media Social Report, March 18, 2016

Didn’t get your weekly dose of social media news? In this week’s #MMSocialReport, we look into what’s going on with Instagram’s newest algorithm, 10 different ways to change up your Instagram game (along with some awesome examples from the TSA), how Pope Francis is *rumored* to join another SM channel, how Giphy is looking to create the Hollywood of GIFS, and more in this week’s report!

1. Instagram is Switching its Feed From Chronological to Best Posts First

by @joshconstine via @TechCrunch

Wanna be America’s Next Top Instagrammer? Step aside Tyra Banks, Instagram just joined the algorithmic timeline trend. Beginning today, Instagram plans to change your timeline and plans to eventually phase out low-quality posts. According to Tech Crunch, Instagram is planning to focusing on a curated timeline, where their expectation is for the user to have a higher interaction between posts that may interest him or her as well as evaluating the relationship between users. As expected, this creates a content competition all across Social Media. Do you have what it takes to be on top?

2. 10 Creative or Weird Uses of Instagram

by @EvanLePage via @hootsuite

Are you really using your Instagram to its full potential? I’m not talking about sunsets, selfies, and cute puppy pics – I’m talking about weird or creative Instagram feed aesthetics. Hootsuite came up with a comprehensive list for all the weird and wacky ways you can set up your timeline to become the ultimate #feedgoals. From crowdsourcing your music video to selling sheep, Instagram can be the ultimate spot for your personal brand to take over social media by storm.

3. Pope Francis Will Reportedly Start an Official Instagram Account

by @catherineshu via @TechCrunch

Hallelujah! Pope Francis, who is known to be a social media lover, is rumored to be next celebrity to join Instagram. Italian newswire ANSA reports that the pontiff plans to unveil his debut under the handle Franciscus in an attempt to endorse open sharing with the public. Considering the power of social media activism, the Pope believes that the power of images can truly empower people around the globe. Who knows, maybe he’ll join the live-streaming community next by broadcasting his masses live.

4. Giphy is Building an Animation Studio to Create Original Content

by @aghoshal via @thenextweb

Giphy wants to become the Netflix of GIFs, according to Giphy founder Alex Chung at SXSW. He isn’t satisfied with the hundreds of users who visit the website each month; instead, the company wants to move towards creating high-quality content for users all around. By assembling a team of animators, marketers,  and editors, Giphy plans on creating the “Hollywood” version of GIFs via Giphy studios.

5. Medium is Betting Big on Curation With its New ‘Collections’ Feature

by @nateswanner via @TechCrunch

Flipboard, it looks like you have some serious competition coming your way – Medium is now giving content curation a shot by integrating a more browsable interface. Rather than solely being a platform for bloggers, Medium is attempting to move towards a strategic revenue generator by pushing “trusted testers” to create and curate content for the front page of Medium. The front page will now feature topics such as Technology and Sports, which can create more drive for the website.

Do you think the social media industry is pushing to create capital off your addiction to memes? Some people are petitioning to halt the Instachange, but how do you feel? Let us know below.
