The internet is a truly unpredictable beast. Just when you think you’ve seen it all — you haven’t. On any given day anything can be launched into the mainstream of cultural consciousness without warning; reaching everyone from your internet friends to your confused grandmother on Facebook.

What makes the viral Area 51 event so interesting is the fact that it has a specific date attached to it, earning it a place in the cultural narrative much longer than most one off viral jokes achieve — and, of course, plenty of memes.
