Metter Media Social Report, Feb. 27, 2015

Gender-Non-Conforming-Facebook-Thumb

In this week’s #MMSocialReport, we take a look at a new service for Reddit users, the effect that ABC’s “Shark Tank” has on the apps featured on the show, Twitter’s anti-harassment initiatives, a new ad feature for Pinterest and an update to gender identity options on Facebook. Progress, it’s happening!

For those who use Reddit for professional purposes, or just those who are aiming to gain some link karma, this new tool is going to be a lifesaver. Authenticate with a Reddit account to get started, and schedule your posts for a later time, with a limit of one post per week to prevent spamming.

2. The ‘Shark Tank’ Effect on Apps

The most recent episode of “Shark Tank” served as a launch pad for entrepreneur Christopher Gray’s new app Scholly, but negative reviews of the app, among others featured on the show, have some questioning the quality of contestants selected to dive in the tank.

After CEO Dick Costolo admitted Twitter “sucks at dealing with abuse,” the company has begun to roll out anti-harassment measures, including requiring authentication of phone numbers. Trolls, beware.

Pinterest

Less than a year ago, Pinterest began allowing promoted pins, and they are now actively pitching new multi-image pins to companies looking to advertise on the scrapbooking site. What does this mean for your feed? Read on to find out.

5. Facebook’s New Gender Option Lets You Choose Anything You Want

In Facebook’s ongoing efforts to allow users to fully express their gender identities on the site, they have nixed the sizable, but not all-inclusive drop-down menu of gender options in favor of a “custom” choice. Users can now opt for their preferred pronoun to be displayed on their profiles, but many are still unhappy with Facebook. Where do you stand? Weigh in in the comments!
